Always use a independant insurance agent, or make sure you get three different quotes from three different insurance companies. If you have a homeowners, or renters insurance policy, make sure you get a quote from them as well, many times you will receive a discount for having multiple policies with the same company.

There are so many companies for car insurance, but I am just confused.

If you are just getting your first policy, it is really important for you to compare quotes too. New or inexperienced drivers tend to be classified as high risk drivers. High risk means high prices. You need to find the company that will be friendliest to a younger driver with discounts for things you already do to minimize rates.
